Some projects feel like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. When I was given the opportunity to design a zoetrope slipmat for the Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Box of Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion in 2022, it felt exactly like that.
An album that made rock history, and I got to turn it into a spinning work of art.
The commission came from Universal Music, and the concept was clear: a zoetrope animation based on the iconic Guns N’ Roses logos, with the freedom to give it my own interpretation.
After intensive testing and fine-tuning, the result was a design that not only honored the essence of the band, but also created a hypnotic animation as the record started spinning.
The end result was released in the deluxe box set of Use Your Illusion, alongside four colored LPs.
This album was part of a pivotal period in my life – I played it to death. That a band like Guns N’ Roses got to work with my work remains a highlight that I never would have dared to dream of.
