Zoetrope for Garland Jeffreys
Some artists leave an indelible impression.
When Garland Jeffreys dropped by for one of our museum sessions, we knew it was going to be a special moment.
This New York legend — who effortlessly blends rock, soul, reggae, and blues — has worked with the likes of Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen, but stood in our living room as if he always belonged there.
Straight from the heart, no frills.
For this concert, I designed a zoetrope, as I do for every museum session. But this time, the presentation was a little more special. In my studio, I had built a demonstration turntable based on an antique sewing machine that my friend Yves gave me. Nick, a handy friend, helped me make it functional. I used that setup to demonstrate the zoetrope at the concert — a visual tribute to music that doesn’t fit into a box.
The concert itself remains one of the most memorable of the entire series of museum sessions. And this zoetrope, projected onto a rotating sewing machine, added an extra layer of experience.
