Heraldy in the Westhoek: a game full of color, symbolism and history
During my years as curator of the museum above my tattoo shop, I developed an educational game: Heraldry in the Westhoek. Not a dry lesson, but a visual and interactive game that introduces participants to the age-old visual language of coats of arms in an accessible way.
The basis of the game is a compact heraldry guide – a kind of mini-dictionary that explains the most important elements of coats of arms, such as colours, shapes, layouts, symbols, animals and objects. With this guide in hand, players get to work on a series of fill-in exercises, in which they learn to ‘read’ and name official municipal coats of arms from the Westhoek.
Everything was carefully designed. The style is in keeping with the classic atmosphere of heraldry, but the game itself is light-hearted, visual and playful. Ideal for schools, groups or families who want to combine an activity with heritage and art. We played it in Museum ’t Krekelhof, but it remains available as an educational package on request.
